| Grandma's Whole Wheat Rolls
1 cup of warm water 2 tablespoons of sugar 2 packages of active dry yeast 1/2 cup of shortening 1/2 cup of sugar 1/2 cup of milk 1/2 cup of hot water 2 teaspoons of salt 2 eggs, beaten 3 cups of whole wheat flour 2 - 3 cups of all purpose flour
In a small bowl, combine warm water and 2 tablespoons of sugar, add yeast and set aside. In a large mixing bow, combine shortening, sugar, milk, hot water and salt. Stir until shortening melts, let cool. when cool, combine mixtures, adding eggs and whole wheat flour. Beat well. Add 2- 3 cups of all purpose flour to make a soft dough and knead for 5 minutes, keeping dough as soft as possible. Place in greased bowl and refrigerate until ready to use, or form into rolls immediately. Place in greased pans, let rise 1 - 2 hours. Bake at 400ºF. for 20 minutes or until brown. |
